I had a trip to Russia for 2 weeks. Now let's try planning a trip to Belarus. In generaly I think it's not too different.
Before Arrival
- Visa
People's Republic of China (30 days but no longer than 90 days within one calendar year) Source: https://mfa.gov.by/en/visa/freemove/general/
- Plane Ticket: Shanghai to Urumqi to Minsk(booked on TongCheng), not transferring through Moscow(need another transit visa), arrival around 07.29 00:10, 3684 RMB
- Book the First Day Hotel: Айти Тайм(booked on TongCheng), 162 RMB; I booked a hotel for the first night easily on the Chinese platform.
- Return Ticket: Minsk to Urumqi to Shanghai(booked on TongCheng), 08.18, 3485 RMB
- Insurance: Buy on BGS, payment can be made by any card, 89 RUB for 23 days(I bought one more day in the start and the end), statement sent to my email.
- Cash: 7000 RMB (to be exchanged and deposited in Sber)
What documents are required?

What documents are required for visa-free arrival?
For arriving to the Republic of Belarus under the 30 days visa-free regime via the National Airport “Minsk”, foreign nationals must produce the following documents at the international checkpoint:
- valid passport or another substituting document for traveling abroad, issued by the relevant State authority;
- Insurance policy, insurance card or other document confirming the presence of health insurance, that covers the territory of the Republic of Belarus. Conclusion medical insurance contract in electronic form;
- Migration card
Citizens of Vietnam, Haiti, Gambia, Honduras, India, China, Lebanon, Namibia, and Samoa must have a valid multiple visa of the EU member states or Schengen zone with a mark in passport on crossing the border of these states and tickets with confirmation of departure from National Airport “Minsk”.
Foreign nationals must have financial means to cover the costs of stay in the Republic of Belarus and departure from the Republic of Belarus in the national currency of the Republic of Belarus or foreign currency convertible by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, equivalent to at least 2 base values, established in the Republic of Belarus on the day of entry into the Republic of Belarus, for each day of stay. Availability of financial means can be verified by other means according to the current legislation of the Republic of Belarus.
ID card is not a document for crossing the state border of the Republic of Belarus. Source: https://gpk.gov.by/en/border-crossing/30-days-visa-free/
Ok, this is extremely confusing. On one hand it says Chinese can enter visa-free. On the other hand it asks Chinese people for EU/Schengen visa. Then again don't Belarus and EU have strong tensions and it's under sanctions or something?
I think basically China was on the list from several years ago and they didn't cross it off. Who'd want to illegally immigrate to Belarus? It's one of the poorest countries in Europe, poorer than Russia. Belarus PPP per capita: 29690 dollars. Ok, it's not THAT poor. Isn't Belarus strongly pro-Russia and in tensions with EU officially(DEI, homosexual, weak, wants their conservative values)? If you are strong: people think you are an "enemy" but "decent person", and they don't fear you visiting. If you are weak: people use you as tools to toss around, and you are a risk instead of a "person". Belarus is visa-free for almost all EU countries.
By the way, the document does not mention how much is "base value"? I read on Reddit it's 40 BYN per day. So it's 40*2*20=1600 BYN, or 3500 RMB.
How do you prove it? Probably a bank statement and not by flashing the cash to officers, although I would be bringing with me a lot of cash. (since there is still a chance my Unionpay doesn't work) What if they create an artificial problem to deny entry and try to force you to pay the bribe?

I am entering from Minsk airport, not through a road from Russia.
Let's not look at this bullshit and just look at this: 中国公民免签入境白俄罗斯及有关注意事项 and 签证入境
- Passport
- Insurance
- Confirmation of Departure Ticket
- Proof of Sufficient Funds: I think a statement of >10000 RMB is enough.
Estimated Budget
- Arrive at Minsk (~3 days), Return to Minsk and leaving
- Plane Ticket: Around 7000-8000 RMB total
- Train Ticket: Around 500-1000 RMB total
- Daily: Around 20 days, 300(100 excursion, play+100 hostel+100 eating/transport) RMB/day, 6000 RMB total
- Insurance: 89 RUB, ~200 RMB
Total ~15000 RMB
What to do on Arrival?
- Migration card (please keep it instead of throwing it away)
- Registration: It says the hotel would handle it but I would ask them and check.
- Go to the first Hotel through bus 300Э(schedule: 00:10 01:00 01:50...), Станция метро Уручье, then walk to the hotel.
- Exchange money in (for example) Sberbank
- Make sure sim card works
Things to Bring with me
- Passport
- Digitals: Phone(2 phones), Laptop, Charger and Converter
- Money: Cash, Sberbank Card, Yoomoney Card
- Clothes; Toothbrush, Cotton swab, Nail clipper, Slippers, Umbrella, Bottle, and a separate plastic bag for these
- A calm mind: Don't be excited, Don't be nervous
Utilities
- Hotel Booking:
- Different services (Yandex Travel, Ostrovok, 101 hotel) show different available hotels in Minsk, shows no hotels available in a small city (~30000 people) Сморгонь.
- Some "unavailable" hotels are available, creating an impression of "most hotels booked", it's not because they are full, but because you can't book through online platforms sometimes. Intuitively it's not a very competitive country and most are vacant.
- Yandex Travel needs to pay in Russian Ruble and may inflate the price. For example, 9 Этаж хостел (Minsk) on Yandex is 1100 Russian Ruble(100 RMB), I wrote to them on WhatsApp and it's 35 Belarus Ruble(76 RMB)
- Belarusian local websites are either nonexistent or the website loads extremely slowly. Western platforms also may or may not work.
- While Yandex Travel/Ostrovok works perfectly in large Russian cities like Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, it doesn't work well in Belarus.
What to do?
- Use Yandex map to search for hotels (not Yandex travel), there are reviews for the hotel.
- There is a telephone number, or some hotels have official websites, where they put WhatsApp/Telegram (they check it, but don't expect instant response) or Telephone numbers. I searched for a hostel near the railway station in Minsk and I found "9 Этаж хостел", I contacted them on WhatsApp and I would be paying on arrival.
- There isn't much point in typical tactics (comparing the pricing between different platforms and if it's cheaper than the "official pricing" on the hotel website) since hotel booking websites aren't reliable or fully functional.
- Good personal communication (instead of relying hotel booking services) is more important in Belarus. I think most communications would be in Russian only, especially in small cities.
- Typical pricing: Belarus is not very expensive, especially in small cities. Hostels: Гостиница Сморгонь 31 RUB; Сити хостел (Брест) 35 RUB, 9 Этаж (Минск) 35 RUB, Хостел Х. О.(Витебск) 20 RUB. A single room anywhere should not exceed 300 RMB unless very luxurious. Intuitively hotels without websites or official prices in these places are more "local" and even cheaper.
-
Money and Bank Card: I have a Sberbank card (2000 rubles left, valid for 10 years) and a Yoomoney card, both Mir payment. I also bring 6000 RMB in cash to be exchanged and deposited into an account at a Sberbank in Minsk.
-
Sim Card: I already have an MTS SIM card. If it doesn't work, I'll just go to the MTS office in Minsk. I don't expect Internet to be very good in Belarus.
-
Train/Bus:
- Yandex map does not show the right schedules or trains. I am not sure about Google maps.
- Yandex Travel shows some trains, electric trains, and bus. Just look up the specific websites like poezdato.
-
Apps: Yandex Map, Sberbank, MTS, Rustore. I am going to bring my 2 phones. (Redmi Note 13 and Pixel 8 Pro) I changed my main phone(Pixel 8 Pro for this trip) language to Russian and the default search engine to Yandex. The other phone's language is in English.
-
Convertor: I got the universal convertor from HongKong.
-
Tours and Activities:
-
Yandex Afisha. Yandex Afisha is quite incomplete in Belarus (unlike in Russia) and mostly there's just movies.
-
Sputnik8. There are tours like "Вся Беларусь за 7 дней" for 1600 RUB with everything included, although it's only starting in late August. There are a few tours:
- Вечерняя экскурсия по Минску(65 RUB)
- Минске - обзорная экскурсия на автобусе (60 RUB)
- Экскурсия на киностудию «Беларусьфильм» (45 RUB)
- Хатынь — память о трагедии белорусского народа (80 RUB).
-
Belkraj. Also some excursions there. Голубые озера: хайкинг и сырные секреты (185 RUB) for 14 hours.
-
Private guide: around 100 RUB/hour, I think it's usually for groups and quite expensive. I prefer group tours.
-
There are many Dzen articles:
Of course, everything(like excursions) would be in Russian.
-
Things to do Before Sleeping
- Wash clothes (either dry them or just get it out of the washing machine)
- Write and summarize the day
- Charge the phone/computer(do not sleep with them)
- Brush teeth, shower
Other Thoughts
